Ermoupolis is the capital of the Prefecture of Cyclades: the town is different from all other Aegean settlements. Majestic, with imposing buildings, economic prosperity and cultural peak, its reputation had once surpassed Greece.
Past centuries’ travellers have characterised Ermoupolis as a capital of elegance and nobility. The frequency of the neoclassical buidlings is not met elsewhere in Greece. In Miaoulis Square stands a very impressive building; the City Hall.
When reaching the island by sea, the two hills of the city present signs of the Orthodox and the Catholic culture. The wealth of religious items in Syros is immeasurable. In the church of the Assumption (Koimisis tis Theotokou) the central painting is a work of Dominikos Theotokopoulos (El Greco).
Nowadays, Ermoupolis has lost the economic power it held in the past. Nonetheless it has preserved its unique image throughout the years. The town has a lush touristic infrastructure and invites visitors to discover its secrets and be transported back to its heyday period.
