The seaside city of Kavala, capital of the Prefecture, bears an important heritage that is easily perceivable in the paved alley-ways of the Old Town, the walls, the medieval Fortress, and Kamares, i.e. the aquaduct built by Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century AD.
The Prefecture of Kavala boasts beautiful beaches near the city of Kavala such as Kalamitsa, Palio, Nea Iraklitsa, Keramoti by the outfall of river Nestos, and other sights like Agios Syllas and the homonymous monastery, the Old Town of Kavala and “Stavros (Holy Cross) on a hill” for the panoramic view it provides to visitors.
A few kilometers outside the city of Kavala, the ruins of the Macedonian city of Filippoi have been unearthed and include paleochristian basilicas, trails of via Egnatia, the Roman forum, the Acropolis and the ancient theatre which nowadays stages theatre performances.
