          History
A significant historical event that took place in Fthiotida was the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC, a battle led by King Leonidas of Sparta against the Persians. Another historical event was the Battle of Sperhios in 995 AD when the Byzantines eliminated the Bulgarian army.
On April 22nd 1821, Athanasios Diakos -a Greek military commander during the Greek War of Independence- was brutally murdered following the Battle of Alamana against Omer Vryonis. On November 24th 1942, the Greek Resistance managed a decisive blow against the German conquerors by blowing up the Bridge of Gorgopotamos.
